Entrepreneurial Skills A (10 Credits)

Introductory unit for 1st year students.
Entrepreneurial Skills A is the level one unit for Enterprise at The University of Manchester. At level one, you will work in small groups and study existing enterprises and organisations, examining how they work and what makes them successful. You will be introduced to a variety of subjects from how to investigate the potential demand for a product or service to how to protect ideas from being copied.

Follow-on unit to Entrepreneurial Skills A
This unit may be taken after completing Entrepreneurial Skills A. Working in groups you will propose a new product or service. You will investigate the idea and finally present it using an 'elevator pitch' to a panel.

Entrepreneurial Principles and Techniques (10 Credits)

The unit focuses on entrepreneurs, their impact on the economy and the skills which they apply when creating and managing their businesses. Enterprising individuals and businesses are examined. You will work in small groups to research and present material to peers.
Management, Finance and Accounting Concepts (10 Credits)

This unit will allow you to understand what businesses do and how they operate. You will understand how information technology has revolutionised the way businesses operate both in its capacity as a tool to support the modern manager as well as an enabler of new business opportunities.
Level 3
Tools and Techniques for Enterprise (10 Credits)

Entry level unit for either 2nd or 3rd year students.
This unit is an introduction to entrepreneurship for 2nd or 3rd years. It analyses the steps needed to shape an idea into a viable business proposition. The unit covers the processes of patenting ideas, investigating markets and raising finance.
Entrepreneurial Management (10 Credits)

The unit aims to introduce entrepreneurial concepts, theories and frameworks for the strategic management of an enterprise. The unit uses a series of case studies which may be used to understand how enterprises are managed on a strategic basis.

Advanced Technology Enterprise (10 Credits)

Available only to students who have completed 'Tools & Techniques for Enterprise'
This unit further develops your understanding of the business environment. It provides a more in depth analysis of how a business case can be developed to support the exploitation of a technology.
Technology Enterprise with Tools and Techniques (10 Credits)

This is a stand alone unit for 3rd/4th year students who have not had the opportunity to attend 'Tools and Techniques for Enterprise' and 'Advanced Technology Enterprise'. This unit covers the essential elements of technology enterprise. It examines enterprises, entrepreneurs, organisations, protection of ideas, fundamentals of finance and an introduction to marketing.
Enterprise Strategy and Marketing (10 Credits)

Available only to students who have already completed either 'Tools & Techniques for Enterprise' or 'Technology Enterprise with Tools and Techniques'.
This unit helps you to apply and build on the knowledge gained from the previous units, further developing the strategic and marketing processes and skills required in the development and management of a successful business.
Enterprise Feasibility (10 Credits)
Level 4 MSEC40022
This unit requires you to work on a project to investigate the development of a new product or service. You will study the processes and skills required for the planning and execution of a successful business, with particular reference to knowledge-based businesses.
Enterprise Opportunity Investigation (15 Credits)
Level 4 MSEC40031
In this unit you are required to investigate an established application of a selected technology in a particular marketplace and then propose new markets for this technology. This requires you to draw upon skills and knowledge from a variety of areas of previous study, both within Enterprise and your own main subject area.
Enterprise Opportunity Proposal (15 Credits)

In this unit you will carry out the investigation and analysis of the potential new market for the technology studied in MSEC40031 and develop a proposal based on your findings.
Entrepreneurial Commercialisation of Knowledge (15 Credits)
Level 4 MSEC4001/2
This unit provides an overview of the process of having an initial idea to the development of a successful venture. During this unit you will develop an idea which you feel may have commercial potential. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own strengths and how they may be used to best advantage in the process of moving ideas into the marketplace. The unit is delivered over a ‘short-fat’ delivery timetable.
Business Feasibility Study (20 Credits)
Level 4 MSEC40922
Available only to students who have already completed 'Entrepreneurial Commercialisation of Knowledge'.
This unit builds on MSEC4001 in which you developed an idea that you felt had potential commercial value. Through MSEC4001, you will have learnt how to apply the tools and techniques necessary to derive, develop and shape an idea, to test out its value and to determine a potential business case. In this unit each group will establish and demonstrate the commercial potential of one of the ideas looked at in MSEC4001.
Flexibility
These units may be studied in a variety of combinations. Usually they are available as options units and are shown in your School’s programme documents.
If you are in your final year and have only 10 spare credits take the stand alone unit Technology Enterprise with Tools and Techniques.

This unit is only available to 3rd Year Mechanical Engineering students.
This unit takes you through the principle techniques and practices of Management Accounting and critically examines their relevance in the management, control and improvement of technology based organisations.

Engineering Foresight (10 Credits)

This unit is only available to 3rd Year Mechanical Engineering students.
What projects will Mechanical Engineers be working on in the future? This unit takes as its starting point the analysis of a current technology and market and then uses a variety of analysis techniques to predict future directions for the market and technology.
The unit looks forward up to 30 years and is concerned with step change, disruptive technology and scientific breakthrough rather than incremental product and process development. The work involves seeing Mechanical Engineering in the widest context of application to future market, societal and technological influences.

Chemistry and Industry (10 Credits)

The unit aims to introduce the enterprising and competitive environments in which chemistry based companies operate. Lectures will be used to introduce broad-level theoretical concepts relating to enterprising business organisations.
The group workshops will, in part, be used to provide input in relation to developing information searching skills, presentation skills, report writing skills and will be supervised by a tutor with responsibility for a specific group of students. The surgeries provide time for you to work on your own projects or use the tutor for advice and guidance.

This unit covers the essential elements of market, competition and strategy in the computer science industry. It includes leadership, intellectual property, ideas development, sustainability and the legal issues of managing a business enterprise.
You will explore the role of business enterprises competing in a market and critically evaluate the issues to be considered in developing and bringing to market a knowledge based idea.

Managing Finance in Enterprise for Computer Scientists (10

This unit covers the essential financial processes in a company, including the use of cash flow, balance sheet and profit and loss statements. It covers the analysis of risk, how goods and services are procured and contracts managed in the computer science industry.
The unit encourages use of simple project management methods and business plans to enable computer scientists to explore the main functions of finance in the successful enterprise.
